Homemade vs. ultra-processed foods

New lifestyles have pushed family food into the background, taking us further and further away from home-cooked meals, ancestral recipes, and table sharing.

Cooking at home has health benefits:

  • We reduce the consumption of ultra-processed foods, rich in sodium, saturated fats, trans fats and refined sugars.
  • We do not have permanent food availability, favoring a safe environment, which helps avoid constant snacking.
  • We improve dietary fiber intake by increasing consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.
  • We carefully plan the foods we are going to consume at each intake, without randomizing the meals, thus improving the quality of the nutrients.

Increased availability and consumption of ultra-processed foods has a negative impact on health.

Its main results are the increase in body weight and associated pathologies such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, some types of cancer.

We recommend:

  • Plan meals so you have all the necessary ingredients at home.
  • Avoid canned ones, you can replace them with frozen ones, they are of better quality.
  • Decrease industrial baked goods such as biscuits, breadcrumbs, lactal breads and replace them with homemade or bakery options, without so many preservatives.
